LG Display Co. posted its second consecutive quarterly net loss due to weak prices of liquid crystal display panels, but it expects improvement in the months ahead as prices rebound. The South Korean company, the world's second-largest LCD maker by revenue after Samsung Electronics Co., swung to a net loss of 255 billion won ($191.1 million) for the first quarter ended March 31, from a net profit of 717 billion won a year earlier.Sales fell 9.2% to 3.666 trillion won.LG Display executives said they are optimistic about the outlook for the LCD market in the months ahead thanks to rising panel prices in some categories combined with increasing orders from key customers.'Demand for LCD TVs is solid world-wide,' said Chief Financial Officer James Jeong. 'We've maintained our factory utilization rate at 98%-99% since February and we have only been able to meet around 70% of our [panel] demand.'Kevin Choi, a vice president, said he expects the supply shortage of some LCD TV panels to continue until the end of June.LG Display said its first-quarter average selling price fell around 12% and its shipments declined 3% from the fourth quarter. For the second quarter, the company expects its shipments of LCDs to increase by mid-to-high 20s in percentage terms from the latest quarter. It also expects average selling prices to rise gradually from the first quarter. While most analysts said a solid recovery isn't likely until the second half, Lim Seung-bum at Hanwha Securities said market factors may boost LG Display's result sooner. Some panel prices have started to edge up since March thanks to companies replenishing their inventories and China's recent policy to subsidize TV and appliance purchases in rural areas.Jung-Ah Lee
